Job Summary
Thomas Fence is seeking a skilled and dependable Automated Gate & Access Control Technician to install, service, and repair automated gate systems and access control equipment. This position is responsible for ensuring systems operate safely, efficiently, and according to customer expectations.
The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting abilities, experience working with automated systems, and a commitment to delivering excellent customer service. This role requires attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently in the field.
Key Responsibilities
Installation
- Install automated gate operators, motors, access control systems, and safety devices
- Configure wiring, system programming, and integration with access control and security systems
- Perform testing and inspections to ensure proper operation and alignment of gate systems
- Verify installations meet company quality standards and customer expectations
Maintenance & Repair
- Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, and programming issues on automated gate systems
- Perform preventative maintenance including lubrication, adjustments, alignment, and safety testing
- Respond to service calls in a timely and professional manner
- Troubleshoot system malfunctions and implement effective solutions
Technical Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications
- Maintain knowledge of current gate operator technologies, access control systems, and industry best practices
- Ensure all work complies with safety standards and manufacturer specifications
- Accurately document repairs, installations, and service work completed
Customer Service
- Communicate professionally with customers regarding system issues, recommendations, and repairs
- Educate customers on system operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance procedures
- Build strong customer relationships through professionalism and quality service
- Provide solutions that meet customer needs while maintaining company standards
Safety & Compliance
- Follow company safety procedures and OSHA requirements at all times
- Conduct job site safety assessments and identify potential hazards
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
- Properly use PPE, tools, and equipment during all job tasks
Qualifications
Required Skills & Experience
- Previous experience as a gate technician or in a similar automated systems role
- Strong understanding of electrical systems, wiring, and mechanical components
- Experience working with automated gate operators and access control equipment
- Ability to safely operate hand tools and power tools
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
- Welding and fabrication experience preferred
- Ability to work independently and manage field service responsibilities
Preferred Skills
- Low-voltage electrical certification or related experience
- Experience programming access control systems including keypads, intercoms, and card readers
- Familiarity with network-based gate systems and remote access technology
- CDL or experience operating light equipment such as skid steers or trenchers
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and physical labor throughout the day
- Ability to climb ladders and work in confined spaces when required
